Obligary Strikethrough Post

At the moment it's pretty obvious that I came here through strikethrough, though I feel that it's worthwhile to add that's not entirely why I am here.

I like LiveJournal a lot, and I'm still planning on being active there. I don't think that the fandom there should move from there. But it would be nice if they (users) acknowledged that fandom exists elsewhere.

And well. I think LiveJournals already acknowledged that they know fandoms a significant part of LJ. It would be nice if they remember that, but oh I'm sure something is going to go wrong in the next couple of months, and well that's to be expected. Hopefully not as many people will get as angry, eh?

But I've always liked being able to go between different places - it's part of why I like things like LiveJournal and Ezboard - one identity - many different communities. I have like... hundreds of forum registrations here and there, but they're not my preference. Too easy to get one password misplaced... Or to just forget about the place and never receive a reminder. Such a pain in the ass to relogin everywhere when the cookies get reset.

Because I really like some of the features on LiveJournal, I've always kept an eye out when people mention clones... This was one of the names that came up with StrikeThrough, I'd never seen it before so was very interested. I don't join up with any LiveJournal clone... The only other ones I've joined are JournalFen (which I love and use) and GreatestJournal (in which I've had it over a year and really don't care). I liked the look of InsaneJournal so decided to join.

One of the reasons that motivated me to get an InsaneJournal is the fact that sometimes the attitudes on fandom on LiveJournal annoys me. And that's just the users.

I hate when statistics get thrown around with no context. (I love that InsaneJournal gives statistics and context to go with it, number of journals, VS active and so forth.)

Sure fandom isn't the majority on LiveJournal. But it's vocal. And active. That counts for something.

And yes, a lot of people were overreacting, but that doesn't mean that there was nothing to be upset about.

Sometimes it feels like the attitude for a lot of them is, unless I've experienced it, it's not really fandom.

I've had my current "fandom" email for 8 years. I didn't consider myself in fandom for all of that time, but... I've only ever used that email for fandom type things. Like games faqs, rpgs, forums, fanfiction, livejournal.

I've had my LiveJournal account for 3 years. It wasn't until I got a LiveJournal when I started to find places in fandom where the majority were girls, and not just a subsection of girls who decided to hangout from a bigger place where they were a minority.

My experience and all that. But like minded people tend to group together... And some of the meta, meta fandom scene don't seem to give any acknowledgement to that at all.

It feels like they are arguing that fandom is all women based groups descending from the trekkers and if you don't fit that, then too bad. Just when you (think!) started off with Nintendo Yoshies as a fandom, it's really hard to see what that has to do with Star Trek at all.

Fandom is broken up into sections. Some mix and are very similar, some stay entirely seperate. Anime fandom while it's becoming more intertwined with Media fandom is still largely different in my oh so humble opinion. Fandoms off of LiveJournal have very different dynamics - but they're still fandom.

And sometimes I get the feeling that, anything off of LJ counts for nothing with some of the LJ fen. Unless it's journalfen. Then they're big meanies boowhoo who have fake sockpuppets. ( Why yes, I use my journalfen account regularly. =D And it's really not hard to find! =D )

I was outraged when I saw someone say that they didn't think of RPG's as being really part of fandom. And utterly amused when I saw someone write their retort elsewhere that they thought of RP's being more representative of fandom than fanfiction was - getting people to group together and take their own path down, etc.

And there's other things like that.

Clearly, Jedi I am not.

Ultimately... I just want to be able to go and hangout else where to remind myself that the Internet is a big big place and keep some perspective. I like the environment here so I think I'll stay. :D
